It was peeling around the face. It was like this when we opened the box.

We have a few of the wooden Thomas and Friends trains in the collection, including the wooden train tracks. I was excited to get this motorized talking version for my 2 year old as all of his other trains are non motorized. He was looking away, not facing me, when I turned these on… when it went past his legs and he saw these, his eyes just lighted up and had a big smile. It was such a precious moment to see. Of course he was curious and was trying to chase after the train. He finally caught up to it when it got stuck and stopped on rug.Don’t expect these to have the same quality and feel as the wooden version. The entire toy is plastic and the face of the train doesn’t have the same 3D effect as the wooden version. Although this doesn’t have that same coolness as the wooden version, the motor and talking makes up for that. You have to press the red T button on the top to make the train go, and press it again to make it stop moving. The motor works great and I found that the train also sort of slightly pivots when it hits something, although for the most part it will be stuck until you remove the blockage. The second and third train, the cargo car, does not have a motor and needs to be pulled by the first train. Only the back wheels on the main train will move, and that is the one carrying the weight and moving all the cargo parts along. You can of course disassemble the cargo trains and just let Thomas run on its own. I also have other “characters” as well and when they come across each other it talks to the train, which I thought was a pretty cool feature for these motorized ones. This is not compatible with the wooden tracks, which is stated on this description page. I also personally tested it out on our Thomas wooden tracks and while it was able to run, it veered off rails quite often. If you don’t have train tracks for these then just let your little ones play with it on a flat surface like a table or floor. We still had a lot of fun without the proper tracks.Oh, and this is one that comes with batteries already, ready to be played right out of the box. You can press the button even before opening the packaging to hear Thomas talk! I do recommend setting aside some extra AAA batteries so when it runs out you can replace them immediately. This uses 2 AAA batteries. The battery compartment is on the bottom of the main train. Turn the train upside down and notice the first screw from the top down, that’s the one to unscrew. Don’t unscrew the wrong ones otherwise it could accidentally disassemble parts of the train that isn’t meant to be disassembled. It is very easy to unscrew, one of the easier ones compared to many other toys that require opening of the battery compartment. The packaging of these are not as cool as the wooden version, housed in a typical paper and plastic blister most toys are in, but most of that is thrown out anyway so I didn’t really care. It was just an observation in case something like that is important to you. Overall I think this is a cool toy and a great addition to our Thomas and Friends train collection. I can’t wait to collect them all!

I also have other “characters” as well and when they come across each other it talks to the train, which I thought was a pretty cool feature for these motorized ones. Also note that on this Percy one, the face looks scratched up but that’s actually the design of this character. From all the Thomas and Friends motorized train sets that I’ve gotten, they’ve all been really great quality, color, and design. I have yet to get a faulty one. This is not compatible with the wooden tracks, which is stated on this description page. My toddler adores All Engines Go, and I prefer it greatly to the previous versions of Thomas the Tank Engine. We had to add this piece to his collection and it’s wonderful!

This Talking Percy train set is adorable. It is made of plastic and is only recommended for ages 3 and up. They include the two batteries so this toy is instant fun and my grandson loves to hear that train whistle blow. Not only does it “blow the whistle” and talk, it has a small light on the front bumper that really works. The red push button is very easy to access and to push and makes Percy run the track and talk. Percy recognizes and speaks to other Thomas train engines when he comes near them (awesome technology) but we don’t own another set yet so we’ll have to test that feature at a later date. It would have been nice to have a small set of the trackmaster track included but it’s readily available and fairly inexpensive. This would make a nice gift, particularly to a child that already has the trackmaster track and other talking engines in the series.
